PICTURE SLIDES

 Lightspots (1969)

The first colour Schools interval caption. So-called due to the presence of those coloured circles from ATV's ident - of course it was ATV who networked the Schools service.

 Lightspots 2 (1975)

Spot the difference! The "FOR" is the same size as the "SCHOOLS & COLLEGES" text.

 Lightspots (1976)

The final incarnation of the Lightspots. The text is the same font as the clock.

 Hedgehog Stamp (1978)

The weekly picture slides were first shown in 1977, and this is one of the early examples. Postage stamps were a highly popular theme for ITV Schools intervals in the 1970s and 1980s.

 Gothic Art (1980)

Does anyone recognise the painting or the artist?

 Flower Textile (1980)

A distinctive look for intervals during Autumn Term 1980. There was a different flower each week, always shown in both side and regular views.

Patrick Sterling And The Great Northern Railway
(1981/1985)

One of 11 classic steam train paintings from "The History Of The British Steam Locomotive", a celebration of steam by Leicestershire artist David Weston.

The Great Central and the Great War (1981)

David Weston's "History Of The British Steam Locomotive" series continues. It's now World War I and Weston uses shattered glass and grimy trains to symbolise the effect of the conflict.

 Victorian Girl (1982)

The theme for summer term 1982 was paintings of children used in late C19/early C20 advertising. The artwork in this slide was used to promote Cadbury's chocolate. But of course this is ITV Schools so all product names and slogans were removed!

Heraldry Stamp: Arms of the Earl Marshal (1984)

One of four stamps issued in January 1984 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the College of Arms. They were designed by Jeffery Matthews FSIAD. The Heraldry Stamps were used as interval slides in early 1984, alternating with Barry Driscoll's Cattle issue.

 Charles, Prince Of Wales (1985)

Bryan Organ's portrait of our next king was part of a selection from the National Portrait Gallery.

 Industry Stamp (1986)

Royal Mail stamps were used for the last time in 1986. The picture shows one of the four stamps celebrating Industry Year 1986. British Film Year 1985 was the other philatelic set used, featuring portraits of much-loved actors such as Charles Chaplin and David Niven.

 Vivien Leigh Stamp (1986)

The other stamp issue used in Spring Term 1986 marked British Film Year 1985. Vivien Leigh was one of five cinema legends shown. This wallpaper is a reconstruction, as we do not have any VT of the actual slide.

 Punks (1986)

All the artwork from ITV Schools' Autumn 1986 collection came from the Cadbury's National Exhibition of Children's Art. This model of a gang of punks was made by pupils of Merrywood Boy's School in Bristol.

 Chilly Billy (1986)

A cheerful painting by Andrea Dyer.

 The Mug Of Tea (1986)

Justin Mortimer was just 15 when he painted this award-winner; now he is an accomplished artist.

 Transport (1987)

The final set of interval slides celebrated the 30th anniversary of ITV Schools. Illustrator Chris Bent produced a series of montages depicting social achievements of the last three decades - one of which was the advances in transport, as seen here.

 Medicine (1987)

The very last interval slide; part of a set marking 30 years of ITV Schools.

THE COUNTDOWN CLOCKS

 Countdown Clock (1960s)

The countdown clock from the black and white days. Apparently this is NOT the very first ITV Schools clock - the first one was similar but the ident was "Independent Television For Schools" in a serif font.

Sadly no footage of Clock 2 exists, so this picture is a Flash reconstruction. Look out for some VT soon.

 Countdown Clock (1969)

Into colour and all that changes is the background colour, now blue instead of black. This version continued to be used regionally after the next revamp in 1974.

 Countdown Clock - Regional (1969)

A yellow telecine version, used locally until 1979.

 Countdown Clock (1974)

Modifications were made to the clock in 1974. There are now two outer circles instead of one; and the legend becomes "ITV Programmes For Schools & Colleges"

 Countdown Clock (1978)

Version 3 of the mechanical countdown clock from the 1970s

 Countdown Clock (1979)

The much-loved countdown clock from the 1980s. It's thought this first appeared in late 1979 following the end of the ITV strike; the new design was part of a general presentation revamp by ATV. Add your favourite programme title!
