Starting Science (1982)

Following the demise of ATV, the titles and format were changed. Max now presented on location rather than in the studio.

Basic Maths (1982)

Fred Harris and Mary Waterhouse present number fun for junior pupils. The series was first shown in September 1981. An imaginative set of titles - was this where Lambie-Nairn got the idea for BBC2's current logo, I wonder?

Let's Read...with Basil Brush (1982)

Two years after getting the boot from the BBC, Basil found a new home with "Mr" Howard Williams teaching infant-age children to read. The show replaced "Reading With Lenny". Boom boom!

Making A Living (1982)

YTV's vocational series for older teenagers first appeared around 1980 but disappeared by 1985. I think the same titles were used throughout.

Geography Today (1982)

Natural disasters and other topics, in this series from Granada. Charles Foster narrated it; his dulcit tones were also known to network viewers in the quiz show "Connections".

The English Programme (1982)

A very late-70s look for the English Programme in 1982. Blink and you'll miss it!

Tomorrow's People (1982)

Multicultural education for secondary pupils, made by Yorkshire Television. The music is "Roxy" from a Bruton LP - some of you may remember it from C4 trade test broadcasts around the same time.

Middle English (1983)

For years "The English Programme" was Thames' major creative series but in 1983 it was joined by Middle English, a similar show for a younger audience. There was a longer version of these titles, featuring a Scott Joplin-style piano rag.

Junior Maths (1984)

Basic Maths became Junior Maths in September 1984. But little changed, with Fred Harris and Mary Waterhouse still presenting.

How We Used To Live (1984)

One of the best-loved ITV schools programmes is still going strong, and featured many a future soap star. The 1984 series was set in 1902-1926; our clips show the titles at various stages during its run.

Your Living Body (1984)

One of Granada's strengths was its science-oriented schools programmes and this series introduced pre-teens to the workings of the human machine. RIGHT: the end credits, for fans of that music!

Seeing And Doing (1985)

The final opening sequence used from the mid-80s. The series died in 1993, thanks to Carlton ousting Thames and Channel 4 taking over Schools provision.

Geography Today (1985)

Three years later and a much shorter intro for Geography Today. The old programmes were still being aired regularly.

All Year Round (1985)

The documentary series which replaced "Alive and Kicking" from 1985. It examined subjects of interest to younger children, such as keeping safe. The programmes were narrated by Vivien Stuart.

Animals In Action (1986)

Originally an ITV daytime show from 1981, this series was adopted as a Schools programme five years later. Keith Shackleton was Anglia's Rolf Harris, sketching wildlife from the film inserts.

Scientific Eye (1986)

The very first episode of Yorkshire's long-running series, still running on Channel 4.

Middle English: Middle Pages (1986)

The literary strand of Middle English profiled well-known children's writers; in this case Janni Howker, author of "Badger On The Barge". This post-1987 showing has no Thames ident but you might find the programme support details interesting!

Good Health (1987)

Still going strong in the 1980s; Good Health tells a "Summer Story" with a few cautionary tales to boot. Lovely music.

The English Programme (1987)

Into the 80s for The English Programme, but the opening sequence is no less short!

Stop Look Listen (1987)

Although this recording dates from 1987, these titles were introduced by ATV in 1981. This sequence survived until the demise of ITV Schools in 1993, by which time Matthew Kelly had taken over as narrator.

 Search (1987)

As ITV Schools celebrated its 30th year, the innovation continued with this social/environmental awareness series for junior pupils.

ITV Schools - 30 Years On (1987)

In June 1987, Anna Ford celebrated the 30th anniversary of schools television with a feast of classic clips. The new countdown clock was unveiled for the first time (ahead of its official launch).

AIDS (1987)

AIDS hysteria gripped Britain and everyone jumped on the bandwagon. This one-off programme offered advice for teenagers and aimed to shatter the myths. Complete with pious pre-programme warning!

Teaching CDT (1988)

The move to Channel 4 wasn't the only upheaval for ITV Schools. With the National Curriculum looming there was an upsurge of INSET training programmes for teachers. This offshoot of Thames' Craft Design and Technology demonstrates the use of a class visit in technology teaching.

Story World (1989)

Tony Robinson demonstrates his appeal to all ages as presenter of Granada's popular reading series. Each week Tony read a story about Tom and Becky from Dragonia. At the start of each show Tony brought the pair to life using his computer. Can you remember the magic word?

REGIONAL PROGRAMMES

Looking Forward HTV (1986)

A series for Welsh secondary pupils, which explored everything from Young Enterprise to disabled pupils in mainstream school. Apologies for the picture quality - you're not meant to get HTV in Devon!

All In A Day's Walk Ulster (1986)

Geology and natural history for Irish teenagers. This episode was networked when coverage of the 1987 election moved Schools to Channel 4 (ahead of the permanent switchover).
